A picture produced from an electron microscope of a polymer membrane filter used for water filtration. Part of the membrane structure folded over itself to look like an ocean wave to surf on. This image resulted from applying a pattern onto the surface of the membrane. These patterns are inspired by nature, such as shark skin, to prevent foulant materials, such as salt crystals, dirt particles, and bacteria, from clogging the membrane filter. By preventing clogging of these membrane filters, this membrane technology could be a cheaper alternative to purify water.
