Synthetic membranes are the standard for fine separations in industry. Usually, their pores are not visible for the human eye, nor optical microscope. Electron microscopy is used to study the porous surfaces of these materials. The example above shows a 200nm pore that did not complete its formation, getting an anguished expression. It resembles the face of the researcher when it realizes that the filter does not permeate. Colorful pop art is added to support the pore's revolt against the traditional views on what a membrane should be.
