Floating Mines

Floating Mines by Yonnie Wu

Cancer cells (CACO-2) transform into floating, mine-like, tubular straw cells under the stress of dehydration. The straw cells are highly hydrophilic (water-loving) and mobile in extracellular fluid. They are the major suspects in the crime scene of many aging related diseases, including malignant tumor metastasis. These cells were imaged using a laser confocal microscope (Zeiss LSM 510) in FITC channel at 10x. The image was processed with superimposed color to mimic the fluorescent color of the cells. Scale bar= 10 um.
