Using a scanning tunneling microscope or STM we have created and imaged a highly-recognizable imprint in the surface of a pure silver (Ag) surface. The artist has used the STM to indent the surface at five locations demonstrating that we can, even at a distance of 10 -9 meter, make objects “by design”. Like many art forms, however, our creation is at the mercy of Mother Nature’s tendencies, and in this case, it is the well known tendency for this particular silver surface to assume sixfold symmetric shapes. Hence, our imprint “spots” which were initially circular have all cured to form crystallographically- aligned hexagons.
