“Curious Eye” is the name given to this image by its authors. The image shows highly regular binding of phospholipids, (the major component of cell membranes), to single-walled carbon nanotubes, synthetic nanomaterials with many potential applications. The middle “desert” features naked carbon nanotubes in isolated form or bundles. The surrounding blue “sea” represents lipids coated on carbon nanotubes or spread on the substrate. This image was obtained with Hitachi 7600 transmission electron microscope and colored in Adobe Photoshop by Josh Mount, son of Dr. Andrew Mount in the Department of Biological Sciences. It was featured in the Journal of Physical Chemistry B 110 (2006), 2475.
