Molten Carbon Material by Santanu Kundu and Martin Beagley

This material is called mesophase pitch, a liquid-crystalline material that is used to manufacture carbon fibers and composites. The yellow, blue, and magenta colors represent the directions of the different phases of the material. In our research, we try to understand the flow behavior of mesophase pitch when it is being processed to make a product. The carbon materials are used for building high-strength structures like aircraft, space craft, and high-performance sports equipment.
