As primary producers (organisms that produce biomass from inorganic compounds), algae are a critical part of many ecosystems. Algae are also responsible for a large portion of the air we breathe. Although some species are problematic, many are beneficial and have been used in areas such as pharmaceuticals, nutraceuticals, food, and biofuel. This image illustrates the beautiful structure and design of one of many types of algae that is often overlooked due to its size, but has great significance.
