Carbon Nano Rotini by Keqin Yang and A. M. Rao

Helically coiled carbon nanowires (HCNWs) represent novel shape and structure at the nano-level. This scanning electron microscopic image shows HCNWs of differing diameter and pitch. Their potential applications include high frequency electronics, tactile and magnetic sensors, and structural foams for cushioning and dissipating energy. This is the first time HCNW have been synthesized using a special method (floating catalyst thermal chemical vapor deposition), which allows a large quantity HCNWs to be produced.
